Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate some quantitative and qualitative semen parameters of Boer and Saanen breeding bucks raised at the Moncada Station. Total of 400 semen samples were collected from 10 healthy breeding goats (05 Boer and 05 Saanen), aged from 19 to 29 months. The results showed that the average semen volume of Boer goats was 1.37 ml (P>0.05), while that of Saanen goats was 1.25 ml (P<0.05). Sperm motility reached 82.49% in Boer (P<0.05) and 80.92% in Saanen (P<0.05). Sperm concentration was 3.64 billion/ml in Boer and 3.52 billion/ml in Saanen (P<0.05). The total number of progressively motile sperm per ejaculate was 4.10 billion in Boer and 3.57 billion in Saanen. The proportion of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa was 9.05% in Boer (P<0.05) and 9.31% in Saanen (P>0.05). The semen pH was 6.56 for Boer and 6.47 for Saanen (P<0.05). The number of straws produced and post thaw sperm motility were 72.22 straws/collection and 67.51% for Boer goats and 60.23 straws/collection and 65.73% for Saanen goats.
